Top 11 Shops to Rent Gear

Rental tent, sleeping bags and mats from St. Regis Canoe Outfitters

Whether you’re interested in trying a new activity or don’t want to haul all your sports equipment on vacay, there are plenty of great outfitters and rental shops to meet your needs. We recently did an overnight camping trip and rented gear, which worked out great. Here are our favorite outfitters and the sports gear they rent.

  1. High Peaks Cyclery — Bike, Hike, Camp, Paddle, Climb, Ski, Snowshoe. Located on Main Street in Lake Placid, the Cyclery covers more than just cycling. Yes, they rent all kinds of road and mountain bikes plus helmets. They also rent SUPs, canoes, kayaks, and paddling gear. Plus hiking and camping gear like hiking poles, climbing shoes and helmets, microspikes, tents, backpacks and sleeping bags. And, don’t forget they rent gear for snow sports like skies, snow shoes, ice climbing gear and fat tire snow bikes. I’ve been very impressed with their friendly and knowledgeable staff whenever we’ve been in the store. When our own gear has needed repair, they’ve helped with repairs and advice too.

  2. Bike Lake Placid. You can rent electric e-bikes and regular bikes at Bike Lake Placid right on the new Rail Trail. They seem to have the best rental prices around, which includes a helmet, of course.

  3. St. Regis Canoe Outfitters — Paddle, Camp. If you’re paddling or planning an overnight paddle/camping trip, St. Regis Canoe Outfitters can help. Not only do they rent canoes and kayaks and all the paddling gear, but they also have a ton of camping gear like tents, sleeping bags, and packs. Plus, with two weeks notice they’ll put together all your trail meals and pack it all up for you. This is a real timesaver for those interested in camping overnight. The only thing to note here is they don’t rent or sell SUPs.

  4. Adirondack Lakes & Trails — Paddle, Camp. Similar to St. Regis, Adirondack Lakes & Trails also rents all kinds of paddling gear and camping equipment for overnight trips. And not only do they offer high-end canoes and kayaks, but they also rent SUPs.

  5. ADK Aquatics — Water Ski, Wake Board / Tube. For those who want to water ski, tube or wake board on Lake Placid behind a speed boat, look no further than ADK Aquatics. We were out on Lake Placid earlier this week and saw tons of people having a blast water skiing and tubing. It looked so fun! All their trips include the gear, boat plus a captain who drives the boat.

  6. Lake Placid Club — Golf. There are many beautiful golf courses throughout the Adirondacks, but the Lake Placid Club is a local favorite. They have a Links Course (designed in 1909), a Mountain Course (laid out in 1910 and redesigned in 1931), and a Pristine Nine course. The club rents carts and clubs and everything you need for your golf outing.

  7. Mirror Lake Boat Rental — Paddle, SUP, Sail. Motor boats aren’t allowed on Mirror Lake, so the Mirror Lake Boat Rental folks rent about every other type of boat you can imagine. Paddle boats, row boats, canoes, kayaks, SUPs, hydro bikes, sail boats, electric boats.

  8. Locker Room 5 — SUP, Ice Skate. If you want to get out on Mirror Lake in the summer or winter, a good stop might be the Locker Room 5 right on Main Street. They rent SUPs in the summer, and all kinds of ice skates in the winter. We’re talking figure skates; hockey skates, pucks and sticks; and speed skates if you want to hit the Olympic Oval.

  9. Mt Van Hoevenberg - Mountain Bike, XC Ski, Snowshoe. As one of the Olympic Legacy Sites, Mt Van Hoevenberg offers mountain biking in the summer, and cross country skiing and snowshoeing in the winter. They also rent all the gear and offer instruction.

  10. Fly Fish the Adirondacks — Fly fish, Ice Fish. These guys do guided trips with all the gear and instruction if needed. All you need is a fishing license. At Fly Fish the Adirondacks, they offer a full-day “learn to fly fish” option with all the gear for $365 for one person and $100 for an additional person. For ice fishing, you get the guide, the equipment and an insulated portable ice fishing tent with heater. Obviously that’s necessary if you’re going to be out all afternoon on the ice, but I still think it sounds super cool.

  11. Cunningham’s Ski Barn — Ski, Snowboard, Snowshoe. When we came up in February 2021, we didn’t pack our skies but wanted to spend a day on Whiteface. Ski the East! So we rented from Cunningham’s. They’re a great store and have been around for years. They rent ski and board equipment for downhill as well as cross country and snowshoeing.
