Ahh, Spa Day

One of my favorite indoor activities is spa day. Hehe! In the midst of life crazy with work pressures, family commitments, social activities … it’s so healthy to take a break and pamper yourself with some quiet time and rejuvenation. Especially if your body aches after climbing all those mountains.

Here are a few spa day destinations to consider in Lake Placid and one in Saranac Lake.

  1. Whiteface Lodge: You can easily spend a day luxuriating at the spa at Whiteface Lodge. Just writing about it makes me want to book an appointment right now! The thing I love about this spa day is you get access to their facilities that include indoor and outdoor swimming pools and hot tubs, steam rooms and saunas, fitness center, restaurant service (they’ll serve you by the pool). When we went, it was a cold overcast day with snow flurries in October — sort of miserable weather — and we were the only ones around soaking in the hot tub, very zen after our massages and steam room, happily munching on hamburgers, and it couldn’t have been more relaxing. It’s a big resort, but feels rather secluded tucked back off Saranac Ave., with views of the mountains from the pool. The grounds are beautifully kept too. A full body massage at the Whiteface Club currently starts at $140 for 50 minutes. It’s located about 1 mile from the cottage.

  2. Mirror Lake Inn: Located right on the lake, the spa at Mirror Lake Inn is very popular and easily walkable. Unfortunately, we haven’t tried it because it’s been booked up the times we called. They also have pools, hot tubs and a fitness center, and it’s definitely on my list to try. A full body massage starts at $140 for 50 minutes.

  3. Hotel Saranac: If you’re in need of a massage and the two Lake Placid options are booked, try the Ampersand spa at Hotel Saranac in Saranac Lake. The massages we’ve had there were excellent. They don’t have pools or hot tubs, but all the usual spa services. A full body massage starts at $110 for 50 minutes, and they also offer a 25-minute focus massage for $50 if you need a quickie! The Hotel Saranac is less than 9 miles, or 15 minutes, from the cottage.

  4. ADK Foot Sanctuary: Speaking of a quickie, the ADK Foot Sanctuary on Main Street is a great little find. They don’t offer full body massage, but if you want something to ease those aching feet after hiking or skiing all day, this is your place. They have a long menu of options considering it’s all about the feet. Foot massages start at $55 for 30 minutes, or you can get a 30-minute foot soak for $35. Whether you walk or drive is your choice. The Foot Sanctuary is about 1 mile away on Main Street.
